Leading internet activities Vietnam Q3 2024
According to a survey conducted in Vietnam in the third quarter of 2024, staying in touch with friends and family was the most popular reason to use the internet among people in Vietnam, according to 69 percent of the respondents. Finding information and keeping up to date with news and events were the second-most common reasons to be online among Vietnamese, followed by streaming videos, TV shows and movies.
Streaming services in Vietnam
Vietnam’s connectivity has significantly improved thanks to the rising number of smartphone users and increasing internet penetration. Although the share of internet users watching television in Vietnam with a conventional TV set was still high, streaming services have gained popularity among many people. Video and music streaming together accounted for around 3.5 hours of daily time spent using online media among Vietnamese. While YouTube was the leading platform for streaming movies among internet users in Vietnam, TikTok was the country's most popular app for watching short videos, especially among Gen Z.
Emerging local platforms in Asia
Throughout the world, American platforms like Netflix and Amazon often hold a dominant share of the streaming service market. In Asia, the number of annual Netflix memberships has been increasing yearly. On the other hand, many local platforms have emerged as preferred choices. China’s iQiyi was expected to be the leading subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) platform with the highest forecasted number of SVOD subscriptions in the Asia Pacific region.
