The number of hospital beds in Belgium has generally declined since the year 2000. At the start of the provided time interval there were approximately 68.9 thousand hospital beds in the country, by 2022 this figure was down to less than 63.6 thousand. Across the same time period the number of hospitals in Belgium has also decreased. 

Healthcare workers in Belgium

  Although the number of healthcare beds in Belgium has decreased, the number of personnel working increased. The number of healthcare workers in Belgium in the period 2000 to 2022 has increased by over 240 thousand. Furthermore, the number of practicing nurses in Belgium increased by around 35 thousand since the year 2000. 

Spending indicators on health

  Belgium’s expenditure on healthcare amounted to 10.9 percent of its’ GDP in 2022. It has been increasing overall since 1980, but has been mostly stable in the past seven years except during the pandemic. In comparison to other European countries, Belgium ranked relatively high on the share of GDP spent on health expenditures. Germany had the highest share of expenditure on health, spending 12.7 percent of its GDP in the regarded year.
