For instance, The Parc Olympique Lyonnais in Lyon, also called Groupama Stadium for sponsorship reasons had a construction projected cost of 381 million euros in 2016. This stadium, which held several Euro 2016 games, was inaugurated only a few months before the beginning of the competition
A major economic event for France
The UEFA Euro is not only a major sporting event, it also has an important economic benefit for the host country. Thus, the football competition was expected to bring in nearly 1.3 billion euros in France. For several years now UEFA Euro revenue from commercial rights have been increasing, reaching more than 483 million euros in 2016, compared to 29.3 million for the 1996 Euro in England. The economic impact concerns the country as a whole but also the cities that host the matches of the competition. Located in the suburbs of Paris and home to the Stade de France (where the final took place), the commune of Saint-Denis benefited from a territorial economic impact of 221 million euros.
