In 2019, Tokyo had the busiest metro network with about 3.9 billion number of journeys followed by Moscow with about 2.5 billion ridership. In 2019, the top 10 busiest metro networks in the world had a ridership of above 1.5 billion each. However in 2020, the figures plummeted as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic and some metro networks were far more affected than others. In New Delhi, traffic decreased by almost 90 percent from 2019, and in New York and Mexico City, the metro network ridership declined by 62 percent and 44 percent respectively.
