The movie theater market in Sweden
The film industry in Sweden also felt the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting mobility restrictions. Between 2019 and 2020, the number of movie tickets sold in that Scandinavian country declined by over 64 percent, standing below six million in the latter year. In 2021, the numbers only recovered slightly, edging up over the threshold of six million admissions. The film distribution industry in Sweden comprises a myriad of players, none of which held more than 15 percent of the market in 2020. That year, the leader was Stockholm-based SF Studios, which accounted for 13 percent of the movie tickets sold in that Nordic country.
The demographics of Swedish moviegoers
Movie theaters are more popular in Sweden among consumers aged between 16 and 29 years. More than nine out of ten individuals from that age group who participated in a 2018 survey stated that they went to the movies at least once a year. The same study showed that there are more moviegoers among women than among men in Sweden. The percentage of male consumers who went to the movies at least once during the 12 months preceding the survey stood at 64 percent. Among female respondents, the share surpassed 70 percent.
