Most used apps in past month on smartphones by Flemish teenagers 2016-2018
Which smartphone app do teenagers in Flanders, Belgium, use the most? Facebook had the highest usage in 2018, but Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat saw the biggest increases in their popularity among the 12-to 18-year-olds in this period. Instagram, especially, became more popular in the Dutch-speaking region of Belgium. Teenagers, however, make up a relatively small share of the user base of the photo and video-sharing application in the country overall.
Uncertainty if there is room for Snapchat to continue to grow
Second in this ranking is Snapchat, the photo app where pictures disappear once they have been viewed. Many teenagers considered the app playful, leading to an increase in its popularity. The monthly downloads of the Snapchat app in Belgium, however, started to decrease in 2018 and 2019. This might indicate that most of Snapchat’s audience already have the application on their smartphone. By comparison, musical.ly/TikTok (an app in which users lip sync and dance to a song in a short-form video of up to 15 seconds, which they can send to their friends) continued to be downloaded in Belgium in early 2019.

Twitch was more popular among respondents with the ages 16-24 than it was among older age groups. YouTube’s penetration rate in Belgium, however, was still considerably higher than that of Twitch.
