Revenue pre- and post-pandemic outbreak

Like its employee numbers, Canadian Pacific has seen a steady growth in its annual revenue since 2016. However, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, revenues in 2020 reveal that the company was hit by low demand for freight services – oil demand, for example, had been severely affected amid the crisis. The railway company has nevertheless seen record grain shipments in 2020. Nonetheless, in the 2021 financial year, the revenue of Canadian Pacific Railway increased by almost four percent, amounting to just under 8 billion Canadian dollars and this increase continued in 2022.

Canadian Pacific Railway’s major competitor – with a market value over twice the size of Canadian Pacific’s – Union Pacific has, unlike Canadian Pacific, seen a steady decline in employees since 2016. In 2022, the market leader reported 30,717 employees, which was a slight increase compared to the previous year. This was due to a combination recovery of revenue in 2021 and 2022 and the implementation of efficiency measures.
