Eurosport is a sports broadcaster which reaches nearly a hundred countries across Europe, Asia Pacific, Africa and the Middle East. Eurosport has four main channels: Eurosport, Eurosport 2, Eurosportnews and Eurosport Asia-Pacific. The first two mentioned – Eurosport and Eurosport 2 – are the most popular Eurosport channels. In 2015, 161 million people subscribed to Eurosport worldwide, while Eurosport 2 had an audience of 72 million people. Along with its broadcast services, the network has a sports news website, and offers an online subscription service called Euposport Player. Eurosport Player is available in more than 50 countries, and gives access to sports events at any time and on any device. Eurosport also has a sporting event management business called Eurosport Events. In 2015, Eurosport generated more than 350 million U.S. dollars in revenue, a significant increase from 2014, when the company’s revenue stood at nearly 200 million U.S. dollars.
Eurosport is owned by Discovery Communications, one of the most valuable media companies in the U.S. Founded in 1985, the company started with the Discovery Channel, and has expanded considerably over the years. As of 2015, American Heroes Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery, Investigation Discovery and TLC are some of Discovery’s most popular channels both in the U.S. and worldwide. Discovery Communications’ first channel, Discovery, still has the largest audience base in the U.S. amongst the company’s channels – 94 million subscriptions – followed by TLC with 93 million subscribers in the U.S. and Animal Planet with 92 million. The company’s revenue has increased over the years as well. In 2015, Discovery Communications generated 6.4 billion U.S. dollars in revenue, the highest figure to date. This figure is nearly double Discovery Communications’ revenue in 2008.
