For the figures on material deprivation the EU-SILC (European Union - Statistics on Income and Living Conditions) survey is used. The participants are private households and the survey is taken every year and published 20 months after the interviews.

Statistics Belgium defines a person being in a situation of severe material deprivation as someone being part of a households that meets four out of nine indicators for deprivation, the nine indicators being the inability to pay bills, the inability to properly heat the house, inability to deal with unexpected expenses, inability to eat meat, fish or chicken every two days, inability to go on a week-long holiday abroad, inability to afford a car, inability to afford a washer, inability to buy a television and inability to afford a telephone connection.
