Number of patients active on organ transplant waiting list in Austria 2021-2023

In 2023, over one thousand patients were on the kidney transplant waiting list in Austria. This figure was an increase on the preceding year. The number of patients on the lung and heart transplant waiting list also increased compared to 2022. 

Austrian transplant activity

There were 36.3 kidney transplant procedures per million population in Austria in 2023, a slight decrease from the previous year when the rate was 36.9. Kidney transplant procedures were the most carried out in Austria, followed by lung transplants at 13.8 per million and then liver transplants at 13.7 per million population. Although there were 76 deaths on the transplant waiting list in Austria in 2023, 38 of which were waiting for a kidney transplant. 

Austrian transplant rate compared to rest of Europe

The rate of kidney transplants in Austria was the seventeenth-highest in the European Union in 2023. Spain was top of the rankings at 77.7 kidney transplants per million population. However, Austria did have the highest rate of lung transplants per million population in the EU.
