In Germany, 25.5 kidney transplants procedures were carried out per million population in 2023. The rate of kidney transplant procedures has increased slightly since 2021. Liver transplants were the second most carried out transplant procedure in Germany in 2023 at 10.4 per million population. 

Transplant waiting list

There were approximately 9.3 thousand patients waiting for a kidney transplant in Germany in 2023. There was an increase in the number of active patients awaiting a kidney transplant compared to the previous year. Additionally, the number of patients requiring either a heart or liver transplant has slightly decreased since 2021. 

Activity compared to Europe

The rate of kidney transplants in Germany in 2023 was low compared to other EU countries. In 2023, Spain had the highest rate of kidney transplants at 77.7 per million population. Additionally, Germany was in the lower half of EU nations when it came to liver transplant rates in 2023. With Croatia having the highest rate of procedures at 25.4 per million.
