Organ transplantation activity per million population in Belgium 2020-2022, by organ

In Belgium, 40.9 kidney transplants per million population were carried out in 2022. The rate of kidney transplant procedures had increased from the preceding years. Liver transplants were the second most carried out transplant procedure in Belgium in 2022 at 25.4 per million, also an increase from 2020 and 2021.  

Waiting list in Belgium

There were approximately 1.1 thousand patients waiting for a kidney transplant in Belgium in 2021, while in 2019 there were around 900 patients active on the waiting list. Additionally, the number of patients waiting on liver and hear transplants has increased since 2019. 

Activity compared to Europe

Compared to the rest of the EU countries, Belgium had a realtively average rate of kidney transplants. Although, Belgium had a very high rate of liver transplant procedures in 2021, with only Croatia and Italy having higher rates of procedures in this year.
