In Austria, 36.9 kidney transplants per million population were carried out in 2022. This is a slight increase from 2021. Liver transplants were the second most carried out transplant procedure in Austria in 2022 at 18.6 per million, with lung transplant procedures at a rate of 11.2 per million population. 

Waiting list in Austria

There were 1,020 patients waiting for a kidney transplant in Austria in 2021, the number waiting for a kidney has slightly decreased since 2019. The number of patients waiting on procedures has also fallen for liver, lung, and heart transplants.

Activity compared to Europe

A rate of lung transplants of 11.4 per million population in 2021 meant that Austria had the highest rate in Europe. Additionally, Austria also had a relatively high rate of heart transplants in Europe, only having a lower rate than Croatia, Slovenia, and Czechia. Austria had the fifteenth-highest rate of kidney transplantation procedures, while Spain had the highest rate in the EU at 63.2 per million population.
