Pancreas transplant rate in Europe 2022-2023, by country

Finland had the highest rate of pancreas transplants in 2023, at 5.1 per million population. Τhis was an increase from 2022, when the rate was 3.6 per million. Estonia followed with the second-highest rate in 2023 at 3.1 pancreas transplants per million. Pancreas transplant procedures are used to treat individuals with diabetes by replacing their pancreas with one that can produce insulin from deceased donor. 

Transplant activity in Finland

In comparison to the rest of Europe, Finland had the second-highest rate of kidney transplants in 2023. There were 58.4 kidney transplants per million population carried out in the country in 2023. Furthermore, Finland had a liver transplant rate of 14.2 per million population, placing it as the eleventh-highest in Europe. 

Waiting on the transplant list

In 2023, there were 772 patients waiting for a kidney transplant in Finland, an increase from the number waiting in 2022. The number of patients requiring liver and pancreas transplants has also increased since the previous year.
