Global per capita consumption of butter 2022, by country

New Zealand had the highest per capita consumption of butter worldwide in 2022. That year, the average Canadian consumed 3.9 kilograms of butter per capita. New Zealand came in the first place at 6.17 kilograms of butter per capita in that year.

Top butter producers

In 2022, India’s butter production amounted to 6.5 million metric tons, making it the leading producer of butter worldwide. The 27 member states of the European Union produced the second highest volume of butter in that year, at about 2.1 million metric tons. In total, the volume of butter produced worldwide amounted to around 11.4 million metric tons that year.

European dairy exports

As one of the leading producers of dairy products worldwide, the European Union is also one of the main exporters of dairy products such as cheese, butter, and yogurt. Some 40 percent of the total export value of dairy products is attributed to the European Union. European cheeses in particular are renowned worldwide, and thus in high demand. In 2021, Germany’s export value of cheese amounted to 5.4 billion U.S. dollars, making it the leading cheese exporter in the European Union and the world.
