Medical technology: radiation therapy equipment in hospitals in Germany 2004-2021

In 2021, the number of radiation therapy units in Germany remained nearly unchanged at around 398 units. However, 2021 marked the second consecutive increase of the number of radiation therapy units.
Radiation therapy equipment describes machines used for treatment with x-rays or radionuclide. By and large, this includes linear accelerators, Cobalt-60 units, Caesium-137 therapy units, low to orthovoltage x-ray units, high dose and low dose rate brachytherapy units and conventional brachytherapy units. Radiation therapy (or radiotherapy) is mostly used in the treatment of cancer, although it can also be used in the treatment of some rare, non-cancerous diseases.
