Medical technology: radiation therapy equipment in hospitals in Belgium 2000-2017

The number of radiation therapy units in Belgium increased by eight radiation therapy units (+3.98 percent) in 2017 in comparison to the previous year. With 209 radiation therapy units, the number of radiation therapy units thereby reached its highest value in the observed period.
Radiation therapy equipment describes machines used for treatment with x-rays or radionuclide. By and large, this includes linear accelerators, Cobalt-60 units, Caesium-137 therapy units, low to orthovoltage x-ray units, high dose and low dose rate brachytherapy units and conventional brachytherapy units. Radiation therapy (or radiotherapy) is mostly used in the treatment of cancer, although it can also be used in the treatment of some rare, non-cancerous diseases.
