The expenditure on research and development in the Netherlands increased by 584 million euros (+4.26 percent) in 2016. With 14.3 billion euros, the expenditure thereby reached its highest value in the observed period.
The source clarifies that this includes the total amount of expenditure on research and development by companies, institutions and higher education facilities with 10 or more employees. This includes only research aiming at originality and innovation, research aimed at finding solutions for practical problems, research aimed at expanding scientific knowledge, without necessarily having direct economic gain as well as the development of ideas and products. Not included is market research, routine research, education and training, rewriting existing software, industrial design, etc.
