Over 3.9 million inhabitants in Sweden were in permanent employment in 2022, and over 1.9 million of them were women, compared to above two million men. Furthermore, there were more female than male temporary employees, and there were more men than women engaged in self-employment.
Increasing number of employees
Since 2008, the number of employed people in Sweden increased until 2019. However, following the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, the number of employees in Sweden fell, but increased in the years after.
Gender difference in the employment rate
The employment rate among men and women followed basically the same pattern over the last 20 years, but differed in the level of employment. The employment rate among men was higher than among women for all years considered.
