Practiced ski activities in the United Kingdom (UK) 2019, by category
Disciplines
On-piste snowsports, whether for recreation or for sport, are typically practiced in ski resorts, which provide such services as ski lifts, artificial snow making, snow grooming, restaurants, and ski patrol. Off-piste snowsports involve the utilization of unmarked or unpatrolled areas either inside or outside a ski resort's boundaries. On-piste skiing is the most popular discipline with 90 percent of respondents frequently participating; off-piste skiing is the second most popular; especially among younger age groups. On-piste and off-piste snowboarding are the third and fourth most popular activities with 33 percent and 26 percent of respondents indicating participation, respectively.
Snowsports Holidays
Respondents typically spend over 1000 British pounds per person for each week’s skiing; with 70% of the budget being spent on travel, accommodation and passes, with the remainder spent on in-resort entertainment. The most popular time to travel is in-season, outside of school holidays, with a hotel or catered chalet, considered the most preferred accommodation type. France, Austria, Italy and Switzerland are the most commonly visited European destinations, with Canada and the USA the top choice outside of Europe. Unsurprisingly, flying was by far the most popular method of transport, most commonly flying to Geneva, Innsbruck, Grenoble and Chambery.
