This statistic shows what percentage of construction projects used various cost contingency percentage ranges segregated by the size of the project, as of 2014. A cost contingency range of 5 to 10 percent was the most commonly utilized in construction projects of all sizes. 55 percent of projects estimated to cost less than 1 billion US dollars used a cost contingency range of 5 to 10%. High cost projects were more likely to use a greater range with 8 percent of those projects estimated to cost more than 5 billion US dollars applying a cost contingency percentage greater than 20 percent.
