Since the 1st of January 2000, two people can legalize their cohabitation status in Belgium. In 2022, around 38,400 declarations were registered. From a regional perspective, the number of declarations was higher in Flanders than in the Wallonia region.
However, with a total of 3,100 declarations in 2022, the lowest number of new legal cohabitations was found in the Brussels-Capital Region. Then again, the population of Belgium varies greatly from one region to another. Such a legal declaration can be recognized as long as the two people are not married or legally cohabitating with another person.
