Atea Pharmaceuticals had the highest capex growth among pharma and biotech companies worldwide during the 2022 period, with a growth rate of over 48,000 percent. Capital expenditures are defined as funds used by a company to acquire or upgrade physical assets, such as property, industrial buildings, or equipment.
U.S. pharmaceutical and biotech industry
Several of the pharmaceutical and biotech companies with high capex growth rates are based in the United States, for example, Atea Pharmaceuticals, Invivyd, and Pyxis Oncology. In 2022, the country accounted for over 40 percent of the global pharmaceutical market. China, which has a much larger population than the United States, had a roughly eight percent market share. In the same year, the United States spent over 600 billion U.S. dollars on medicine. This was more than double the amount spent back in 2009.
The largest American pharmaceutical company based on revenue was Pfizer (according to the FT Global 500). The multinational biopharmaceutical company is headquartered in New York City and annually generates more than 100 billion U.S. dollars’ worth of annual revenue, as of 2022.
