In Belgium, two people living together can legally officialize their cohabitation since the 1st of January 2000. From 2008 to 2018, over thirty thousand new legal cohabitations were registered every year. In 2018, just under 39,000 new legal cohabitations were registered in Belgium.
Furthermore, the number of declarations reached a high of 40,770 declarations in 2015. Such a legal status is possible to obtain in Belgium regardless of gender and family ties. However, people wishing to declare their cohabitation must not be married or already legally cohabitating with another person.
