U.S. national LEED construction spending forecast 2005-2018
LEED in the United States – additional information
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is one of the most commonly recognized green building certifications used in the world. It was developed in 1994 under the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and covers a wide range factors involved in the construction process, including design, construction, maintenance, and building operations. In 2015, California had the highest number of LEED project certifications by far, totaling some 618 projects, followed by Texas with 237 projects.
In 2014, the United States spent just under 50 billion U.S. dollars on LEED construction, the nation is expected to increase spending to some 78.6 billion U.S. dollars by 2018. Under current trends, green building construction growth is exceeding the traditional construction industry. LEED is expected to experience growth across all sectors. In 2015, there were some 19 LEED-certified hotels in New York and there were 66 LEED-certified facility projects in Texas as of May 2016. Under continued investments into green technologies and increased infrastructure spending, the green construction market will likely continue to grow. The shift in focus towards energy efficiency, greenhouse gas reduction, and the creation of more domestic jobs has also lent to the growth in green building. LEED certification continues to evolve as new technologies are developed and has also been altered to better suit country-specific standards, such as the LEED Canada established in 2003.
