This statistic shows the demographic pressure in the Netherlands from 1950 to 2023. It shows that until 1965 the demographic pressure increased from 81.9 percent to 90.3 percent. This corresponds with the baby boom period that came after the Second World War. After 1965, the demographic pressure decreased until 1995, from 90.3 percent to 60.2 percent. After 1995 the demographic pressure started to increase again, this time as a result of an aging population. Between 1995 and 2023, the demographic pressure increased from 60.2 percent to 70.3 percent.

The demographic pressure is the ratio of the non-working (0-20 and 65 years and older) population to the working (20-65 years) and is calculated by dividing the sum of the non-working population by the working population x 100. The higher the demographic pressure, the more non-working people the working population has to support.
