Import volume of pasta products to Germany 2009-2023

Germany imported around 620.9 thousand tons of pasta products in 2023. Figures generally did not change significantly during the specified timeline. No noticeable drops in numbers were recorded during the pandemic lockdowns of 2020 and 2021, as well as amid or despite the food price growth in Germany in the past year. Pasta remains a sought after product.

Imports and production

The common assumption may be that the majority of pasta imports to Germany come to Italy, as that country is famed for its pasta production and creations. Not quite, but figures still speak for themselves to confirm demand. As of 2021, imported Italian pasta had a market share of almost 50 percent, a slight decrease compared to the previous year at nearly 53 percent. However, in the last decade figures remained stable and within the 55 percent mark. Germany’s own pasta production actually increased in recent years, at almost 338,000 tons produced in 2021. The pasta market is also experiencing shifts due to changing consumer preferences, as well as the necessity to adapt in order to remain profitable. An example is the gluten-free pasta, the market value for which is expected to increase worldwide in the next years.

In Italy

On average, around 37 percent of Italians ate pasta 2-3 days a week. 17 percent consumed 6-7 days a week. In terms of the type of pasta, the majority ate classic wheat pasta.
