Leading supplier countries for wine imports to Germany 2021-2022, by import volume

Italy was Germany’s main wine import partner, with around 4.86 million hectoliters imported in 2022. Other leading countries of origin for wine imports were European wine production heavyweights Spain and France.

White wine

Germany has a thriving wine production industry and the country is especially known for its white wines. This is reflected in wine production volume figures, with roughly 5.94 million hectoliters of white wine produced in 2022. Per capita wine consumption has fluctuated slightly among German consumers, amounting to around 19.9 liters that same year. At the same time, Germans definitely consumed more wine than sparkling wine, one of the reasons perhaps simply being the variety of German wines on the market, as well as foreign ones.

Decreasing export value

In 2022, German food retailers sold roughly 800.9 million bottles of wine (of 0.7 liters each). Germany also exports its wines, though value has been mostly decreasing in recent years.
