Approximately 196 million pounds of TRI-listed chemicals as production related waste were released to water bodies across the United States in 2022. The food manufacturing sector accounted for almost 40 percent of the water releases that year. This was followed by the petroleum products manufacturing sector, which released 17 percent of the overall volume.
