Approximately 196 million pounds of TRI-listed chemicals were released to water bodies across the United States in 2022. Nitrate compounds accounted for 90 percent of releases that year. Nitrate compounds are soluble in water and often form during wastewater treatment processes. The remaining 10 percent of water releases were made up of other chemical compounds, such as methanol and manganese. The food manufacturing sector contributes the largest share of water releases.
