The majority of houses purchased in the United States in 2023 were between 1,500 and 2,500 square feet. These accounted for about 54 percent of purchases made by house buyers in that year. On the other hand, about nine percent of buyers purchased homes larger than 3500 square feet.

The source adds the following information: "In July 2023, NAR mailed out a 129-question survey using a random sample weighted to be representative of sales on a geographic basis to 189,750 recent home buyers. The recent home buyers had to have purchased a primary residence home between July 2022 and June 2023. A total of 6,817 responses were received from primary residence buyers. After accounting for undeliverable questionnaires, the survey had an adjusted response rate of 3.6 percent."
