Most popular supermarkets in Germany 2021

REWE or REWE City supermarkets lead the popularity ranking in Germany. The international company is headquartered in Cologne and has a history that goes back several decades. In 2021, 50 percent of Germans surveyed for the statistic at hand shopped at REWE or REWE City.

Supermarkets rule supreme

Grocery shopping in particular is not only an essential task, but practically a pastime in Germany, with consumers usually having very clear opinions and preferences on what type of stores they like to shop in, whether they do so online or not, and which supermarket chain or brand they support. Sometimes this is simply due to only a certain type of store or supermarket being available in a specific area. The majority of German customers buy their food and everyday necessities in supermarkets. REWE is also among the supermarkets where Germans regularly buy groceries and daily needs products.

Food for thought

German food retail companies were in the lead among their European colleagues in terms of revenue. In fact, four German companies made it in the top ten, among them the aforementioned REWE and Edeka. Supermarkets and traditional food retailers have seen a stable market share of roughly 10 percent in German retail trade during recent years.
