In 2021, the average levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for solar photovoltaic systems was between 30 and 180 U.S. dollars per megawatt hour. At the same time, Australia had an LCOE for solar PV between 30 and 99 U.S. dollars per megawatt, making it the country with the cheapest maximum LCOE that year. In recent years, electricity prices have increased mostly due to increased transmission and distribution investments. The LCOE is calculated by using the average cost to build and operate a power plant divided by its total power output over its lifetime. It is a measure of comparison between different electricity generation methods.
