The United States emitted approximately 12.5 million tons of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in 2023 – a slight decrease compared to the previous year. VOC emissions in the U.S. have reduced by 46 percent, relative to 1990 levels. Volatile organic compounds have a high vapor pressure at room temperatures and occur from anthropogenic sources and naturally occurring chemical compounds. The largest sources of VOC emissions in the U.S. are activities such as petroleum and related industries and solvent utilization.
