The capacity for renewable energy in India has increased in recent years. As of June 2023, the South Asian country had an installed solar rooftop capacity of approximately 6,895 megawatts in the industrial sector. The total rooftop solar generation capacity amounted to 12.8 gigawatts that time. The demand for solar photovoltaic cells has increased across the country, where a sizeable part of the population still lives without electricity.
Domestic solar power in India
India’s total installed power capacity stood at almost 360 gigawatts in 2019, with the renewable sector amounting to 80 gigawatts of that capacity. The country had the largest photovoltaic power plant in 2021, with a capacity of more than 2,200 megawatts. The government has made attempts to boost the use of solar power within the country, with sunlight available about 300 days a year. The value of large-scale solar project tariffs has been declining in the last couple of years. There has been an even participation of the urban and the rural sections in making the shift. Around 128 thousand irrigation pumps were installed across the nation in 2017 and over 0.2 million solar home systems were sold during the same year.
Is solar the future?
Faced with land acquisition issues, tax uncertainties and import duties, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy lowered its targets by 23 percent for the financial year 2020. Cancellations of large-scale solar projects were presumably one of the many reasons. The country’s goal to reach an installed solar power capacity by March 2022 would require the addition of over 71 gigawatts with less than 34 months at hand.
