Smart meters installed annually in the U.S. 2008-2019

An estimated eight million units of electric smart meters were deployed in the United States in 2019. Smart meter installations have stagnated in the last three years. By comparison, many smart meters were installed in 2010 and 2011 due to stimulus from funding given out in 2009 which was employed by many of the largest utilities.

Smart meter stimulus in the early 2010s

The stimulus funding for smart meters, the Smart Grid Investment Grant established in 2009, prompted a significant increase in installations in 2010 and 2011. Annual deployment in the U.S. reached a peak in 2011 when 12.6 million units were added to the network. Smaller electric utilities have also been approved to pay for installations through their retail sales revenues. Global smart grid investments showcase that most countries emphasize spending on power equipment and advanced networks. Smart meters only account for a minor share in total investments.

Deployments by utilities

NextEra Energy, of which Florida Light & Power is a subsidiary, has installed the most number of smart meters of any U.S. electric utility. As of 2018, NextEra Energy had deployed more than 5.5 million units. Total smart meter installations in the U.S. was expected to reach 107 million units in 2020.
