Number of Edeka Group stores in Germany 2004-2023
In 2023, the Edeka Group operated over 11,000 stores in Germany. This was not a significant change compared to recent years. Though compared to 2004, at the beginning of the given timeline, figures had increased noticeably. Edeka operates the well-known Edeka supermarkets.
A success story
Edeka is among the best-known non-discount supermarket chains in Germany, with location, size, selection, and prices varying by districts and cities. The Edeka Group recorded growing revenue figures across most of its divisions in the last few years. In 2022, the independent retail segment generated around 36.5 billion euros, compared to 34.7 billion euros the year before. Independent retail refers to the sale of products manufactured or produced by other companies, but the retailer itself is owned privately. Total revenue figures for the Group also showed a steady growth trend, with around 66.2 billion euros generated in 2022. The pandemic years did not affect the Edeka Group’s success adversely, on the contrary, they remained stable.
Big and bold
Edeka was also among the most popular hypermarkets in Germany as of 2022, between Aldi and Lidl. While not every Edeka supermarket is a hypermarket, by definition, plenty are large enough to be considered such. The Edeka Group has also been increasing its retail space annually during the last decade, with around 11.83 million square meters in 2021.
