Solar photovoltaic electricity production in Greece 2013-2023
Greece's electricity generation from solar photovoltaics reached almost 8.4 terawatt hours in 2023. In that year, Greece was the seventh-largest solar PV electricity producer in the European Union. Germany and Spain led the region’s solar energy generation with more than 61 and 42 gigawatt hours produced in 2023.
Greece’s solar energy industry
The solar PV sector in Greece has gained momentum in the last few years. After a period of stagnation, solar PV investments in the country started increasing in 2019 and reached 1.1 billion euros in 2023. Similarly, employment in the solar sector has presented a growing trend in the last four years. In 2023, there were roughly 15,700 direct and indirect jobs in Greece’s solar PV industry.
Solar PV installations in Greece
Between 2019 and 2023, Greece increased its solar photovoltaic capacity by more than double, reaching 6.5 gigawatts in the latter year. Regionally, Central Greece concentrates roughly one-quarter of the solar capacity installed across the country. Central Macedonia and Thessalia are also important regions for solar, each accounting for 15 percent of the total capacity. In 2022, more than half of the solar systems installed in Greece were below the size of 500 kilowatts.
