Managed File Transfer software – additional information
Managed file transfer (MFT) software is a type of integration middleware helping to connect software components or business applications with one another. It helps businesses and their users to securely transfer data, move large numbers of files easily between two or more systems, exchange data between partners, or transfer large files (digital media, for example) over a network. In contrast to more common file transfer software, MFT provides security and auditability of the transfer, as well as greater guarantees of transmission. MFT applications are sold both as licensed software packages, run by businesses for their own purposes, or as part of Software as a Service (SaaS), whereby the software is administered by a third party.
The managed file transfer market can be divided into three segments: system-centric, people-centric, and extreme. System-centric file transfer software involves the automated delivery of large files between systems. People-centric file transfer software, in contrast, involves the transfer of files between workers or from workers to systems. The emphasis is often on easy-to-use client software and integration with other employee software. In the last segment, extreme file transfer software, the focus lies on the transfer of large, time-sensitive files, which may not transfer efficiently over a regular network.
Among managed file transfer vendors, IBM remains a top competitor, generating around a quarter of a billion U.S. dollars in annual revenue from MFT software in 2013, coming almost entirely from the system-centric segment. In comparison, Axway , one of IBM's closest competitors in the market, earned around 90 million U.S . dollars in the same year.
