The market value of the Canadian tobacco industry was forecast to reach approximately 19.1 billion dollars by 2019. This is over a ten percent increase in market value since 2014. Retail sales of tobacco products and supplies have witnessed similar growth, with sales reaching approximately 10.93 billion Canadian dollars in 2017, an increase of almost two billion Canadian dollars over the four-year period.

Despite this increase in market value and retail sales, the share of Canadians who smoke currently, daily or occasionally has continued to decrease year-on-year, hitting a low of 16.2 percent in 2017. According to a recent survey, of those who smoke at least regularly, the majority of Canadians smoke between 11 and 20 cigarettes per day. Cigarettes were by far the most popular tobacco product consumed of any, followed by e-cigarettes and cigars. However, the usage of e-cigarettes, otherwise known as vaping, is on the rise in Canada. Results from a recent survey show that almost one fifth of Canadians had tried this form of tobacco consumption in 2018.
