Urban public transport in the United Kingdom produced around 3.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2021. Emissions from public transportation have been in decline over the past three decades, having reached highs of more than six million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 1995. Public transport is seen as a key to decarbonizing the transportation sector. Private modes of transportation produce far more emissions, with passenger car emissions producing the equivalent of nearly 57 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2021.
