Institutional investors share of assets under management in Europe in 2015

This statistic shows the share of assets under management on the European asset management market in 2015, by type of institutional investor. Assets under management (AuM), also called funds under management, provide a measure of the total financial assets on the investment market under management of a specific company. This measure is used to gauge the success on the financial markets of the investing company. Companies, which invest on behalf of the clients include mutual funds, venture capital firms or brokerage houses. Institutional investors, such as listed in this statistic, are organizations that trades securities in large quantities, which can qualify them for an access to preferential treatment and/or lower commissions. Institutional investors also face fewer protective regulations. They invest in larger block trades of 10,000 shares or more; typically they avoid buying stock of smaller companies. As shown on the statistic, 42 percent of the market of assets under management of institutional investors was owned by insurance companies in Europe as of 2015 and further 32 percent went to pension funds.
