In Estonia, the number of payment cards issued from 2010 to 2023 fluctuated around a similar number for several years with a slight year-on-year increase. The number of cards with a payment function amounted to a little over two million in 2023 while this number amounted to almost 1.97 million the year before. Cash use has become increasingly less important in Estonia. While 88.7 percent of payment transactions were in cash in 2000, this number dropped to below 40 percent.
