Despite not making it to the top ten global markets with the highest online shopping penetration, Canada’s e-commerce market is relatively strong. It was calculated, that in 2014 there were 20.2 million digital buyers in the country. This number is predicted to reach 22.5 million digital shoppers by the end of 2018. In Quebec alone, the figures indicate that nearly one in three residents of the region buys products or services online. In 2014, it was measured that 28 percent of Quebecois online shoppers made purchases on a monthly basis.
When it comes to digital purchases, it seems that previous experience plays a significant role in the buying process. The vast majority of online shoppers in the region admitted to buying new products from sites they have previously visited, and 23 percent of online purchases were made on sites found via search engine results. Only one percent said they shopped on e-commerce sites they found owing to banner advertising or circulars.
Among the most popular product categories that Quebec residents buy digitally are fashion and accessories, consumer electronics and entertainment items such as music, movies, games, books or magazines. However, the Quebecois spent considerably more on travel and transport online purchases in 2014 – 820 Canadian dollars per transaction, whereas the average amount spent per online transaction related to fashion and accessories reached 113 Canadian dollars in the same period. Still, a lion’s share of online dollars powered the neighboring economy – 71 percent of consumer electronics purchases in Quebec and 78 percent of music, movies and games purchases were made on e-commerce sites originating the United States.
