Total acid rain precursor emissions in the United Kingdom amounted to 1.5 million metric tons of sulfur dioxide equivalent in 2022. Acid rain precursor emissions in the UK have fallen by about 80 percent compared since 1990.
Atmospheric pollutants such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides mix with water vapor in the air, which are then converted to sulfuric and nitric acids, respectively. These acids make the rain acidic. When these solutions fall to the earth, they can increase the acidity levels of soils and water bodies.

Characteristic
Mass of air emissions in million metric tons SO₂ equivalent
Sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrous oxides (NOx) and ammonia (NH₃) are measured as a precursor to acid rain. Excludes natural word. Natural World includes emissions from grassland, forest and vegetation, and accidental fires thereof, evapotranspiration of humans and wild animals, and wild animal wastes.
