Further information Google Play is a digital content distribution platform operated by Google. Apart from being the official app store for the Android mobile operating system, users can also purchase and download digital media such as television programs, movies, and magazines. Google also offers an audio streaming service called Google Play Music.
In the second quarter of 2015, the Android smartphone operating system market share amounted to over 82 percent, providing Google with an immense user base for its platform. As of July 2015, 1.6 million apps for smartphones and tablets were available in the Google Play app store. In February 2015, 68.8 percent of available apps were free to download whereas 31.2 percent of apps were paid. In 2019, Google Play revenues are projected to amount to 13.8 billion U.S. dollars, up from 6 billion U.S. dollars in 2015. Google was also named as the most popular monetization platform among app developers worldwide, followed by Flurry and Chartboost. A September 2014 survey found that the majority of apps in the Google Play store only had between 101 and 500 installs.
As of the third quarter of 2015, 53 percent of global internet users 16 to 24 years of age had accessed Google Play in the past month. The second-largest user group was 25 to 34 year olds.
