This statistic shows the vendor revenue of the public cloud Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) market from 2012 to 2026. In 2014, the revenue of vendors offering Platforms as a Service in the public cloud market reached a combined value of 1.6 billion U.S. dollars. Until 2026, according to this forecast, annual revenues should total almost 48 billion U.S. dollars. Together with Software as a Service (SaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) is one of the three overarching models of cloud computing, allowing a business to redirect resources away from IT infrastructure, hardware, and personnel expenses, and towards other needs.
Platform as a Service - additional information
Through Platform-as-a-Service offerings, providers sell their clients access to a computing platform for application development. This usually encompasses an operating system, web servers, databases, and access to a programming-language(s) execution environment. Customers have the ability to develop and execute their software on the cloud platform, without worrying about purchasing or maintaining the supporting hardware, software, and storage resources.
Platform as a Service currently represents the smallest segment of the total cloud computing market, but revenues are expected to rise significantly over the coming years. Within 10 years, the share of platform as a service is expected to triple, although it will remain significantly smaller than both the cloud software and infrastructure markets.
In the PaaS market, the largest companies are currently Salesforce, Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM. While Salesforce is currently the largest vendor of cloud platform services by some margin, its continued dominance is uncertain. Amazon in particular already controls much of the cloud infrastructure market.
