Quarterly expenditure on restaurants and cafes based on volume UK 2021

The annual expenditure on restaurants and cafes of households in the United Kingdom amounted to roughly 60 billion British pounds in 2020, down 39 percent from the previous year. Spending was particularly lower during the second quarter of the year, reaching as low as 3.8 billion British pounds. That was 83 percent less than in the same period of 2019. The annual expenditure on restaurants and cafes by UK households significantly declined in 2020 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic which resulted in strict stay-at-home measures implemented across the country to control the spread of the virus. In the fourth quarter of 2021, annual expenditure increased to nearly 26 billion.

As noted by the source, includes alcoholic beverages sold for immediate consumption away from the home by hotels, restaurants, cafés, bars, kiosks, street vendors, automatic vending machines, etc. and excludes tobacco purchase. Does not include catering services, canteens or tobacco purchases.
All figures prior to and including 2021 came from previous reports.
