Following a decline in 2020 and 2021, when the restaurant and cafe industries were heavily impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, annual expenditure on these industries increased dramatically in 2022. In 2023, the volume of expenditure declined marginally from the previous year, reaching 113.89 billion British pounds.

As noted by the source, includes alcoholic beverages sold for immediate consumption away from the home by hotels, restaurants, cafés, bars, kiosks, street vendors, automatic vending machines, etc. and excludes tobacco purchases. Household final consumption expenditure based on chained volume measures (seasonally adjusted). Figures are given here in volume terms rather than value terms to give a better picture of whether households purchased more or less goods and services over the period in consideration. All figures prior to and including 2023 came from previous reports. Data can be found under Table 11KS in the Excel sheet.
