This statistic shows the number of adults hospitalized after a suicide attempt in the United States, from 2015 to 2021, by age group. In 2021, some 517 thousand adults were hospitalized overnight or longer after attempting suicide, from which 225 thousand were aged between 18 and 25 years .

NSDUH respondents who attempted suicide in the past 12 months were asked if they had been treated medically as a result of a suicide attempt, and subsequently those answering “yes” were asked if they had stayed in the hospital overnight or longer because of a suicide attempt. Respondents with unknown suicide information were excluded.
Missing data for 2020 and 2021 are due to low precision and measurement issues.
