This statistic shows the number of adults hospitalized after a suicide attempt in the United States, from 2015 to 2023, by age group. In 2023, some 354 thousand adults were hospitalized overnight or longer after attempting suicide, from which 148 thousand were aged between 18 and 25 years.

NSDUH respondents who attempted suicide in the past 12 months were asked if they had been treated medically as a result of a suicide attempt, and subsequently those answering “yes” were asked if they had stayed in the hospital overnight or longer because of a suicide attempt. Respondents with unknown suicide information were excluded.
Missing data for 2020 and 2021 are due to low precision and measurement issues. * Due to methodological changes from 2021 onwards, caution should be used when comparing figures since 2021 with previous years. Please see source for further information on methodology. Figures were taken from multiple reports of the same source.
